NEW! Business Series: 3 Biggest Cyber Security Threats Small Businesses Face and How to Protect Your Company Now

When:

May 31, 2023

Presenter:

Alvion Legall, CEO & Owner, ABL Computers

CEUs: .1
What You Will Learn

Cyber-attacks against small businesses have been on the rise in recent years. Despite the attitude among many small business owners that hackers only go after large companies, smaller companies make increasingly attractive prey. In fact, certain types of attacks–social engineering attacks, like phishing, for example–are much more commonly aimed at small businesses.

Cyber criminals know that weaker security measures in place at small businesses makes them easier to crack than larger enterprises. Small businesses are not financially prepared for an attack, and most lack cyber insurance. For many small companies, a cyberattack may result in putting them out of business.

Business owners need a cybersecurity strategy to protect their own business, their customers, and their data from growing cybersecurity threats. Join us as Alvion Legall will explore 9 steps you can take to protect your business and maintain network security.

During this session, you will:

  • Discover the various types of cyber-attacks that are currently aimed at small businesses.
  • Determine what network security measures to take to prevent, detect and monitor your network against attacks.
  • Explore 9 steps that you can take to protect your business from cybersecurity threats.

Lighting Lessons Learned: Five Kitchen Case Studies

When:

May 9, 2023

Presenter:

Doug Walter, AIA, CMKBD, Owner, Doug Walter Architects

CEUs: .1
What You Will Learn

Lighting is hard. Lighting is easy.  Which is it?  Come invest an hour with Subject Matter Expert Doug Walter as he simplifies lighting rules of thumb by sharing five of his projects and how he solved their lighting challenges; everything from flat 8-foot ceilings to modern vaulted ceilings, from minor to major remodels,  from tight budgets to unlimited ones. You don’t need to spend a fortune to get good lighting; you just need to follow the rules and put useable illumination down on the work surfaces using layers of lighting.

It all starts with the plan.  It used to be, we were taught that downlighting needed to be far from the cabinetry to avoid scallops and provide even light.  Through on-site research on actual jobs, Doug has proven that not to work at all. He has documented this research in over a dozen trade magazine articles and dozens of seminars. Comments from past attendees to Doug’s lighting classes said, “Very informative, useful practical tools and tips that I can actually take back and use” and “Best class I took at KBIS; so much information!”

Discover the new improved Lighting Guidelines in the new Kitchen & Bath Design Guidelines, which Doug helped craft.  It has very specific advice on placing downlights and achieving minimum foot candle levels.  He also was one of three authors of the Lighting Badge curriculum and is an active member of the Illuminating Engineering Society, the AIA, and of course, NKBA.  He will share a six-page handout with glossary and bibliography to all attendees.

During this session, you will:

  • Discover the changes in the New Kitchen & Bath Guidelines in the lighting section and why they were changed.
  • Explore how inadequate code minimums and textbook guidelines can be and how to do your own quick and easy research.
  • Become inspired by photos of dozens of award-winning projects from around the country that combine great artificial and natural lighting.
  • Examine how to measure delivered foot candles on any project using a free smartphone app and be your own lighting expert.

Specifying Lighting – What You Need to Know

When:

May 3, 2023

Presenter:

Cas McDaniel, Marketing Manager-Loox Illumination, Häfele America Co.

CEUs: .1
What You Will Learn

Illumination is a critical design element that transforms the look of space, stimulating an emotional response. The transformation begins after space planning is complete, as the next steps include configuring illumination into the floor plan. There is a perception that illumination can be challenging for designers and manufacturers to incorporate correctly into projects. The perceived difficulty can even influence those specifying to withhold illumination, with installation to be handled by the end user.  We will discuss those complexities, and afterward, you will better understand what you need to know when specifying illumination.

In examining specifications for integrated illumination, we will cover the following:

  • In-depth, we will review voltage requirements based on the project application.
  • Identify the differences between types of illumination and best use.
  • Calculate the wattage required and how to choose a suitable power supply accurately, revealing the secrets behind a lighting designer.
  • Compare monochrome light temperatures ranging from Warm White to Cool White and discuss why Tunable Multi-white provides significant advantages for Designers and Manufacturers.

We will discover the various types of specified lighting and how functional task, ambient, and accent light sculpt a space. Furthermore, we will explore the benefits of wireless switches controlled by Bluetooth technology and disclose how lighting systems can be controlled with “Hey Alexa, dim my kitchen lights,” along with whole home integration.

The outcome is to have both Designers and Manufacturers at ease when specifying illumination, no matter the complexity level of a project. When illumination is specified accurately during development, a space’s originality is showcased, and a consumer’s perception of value elevates. The benefit from a consumer seeing correctly installed lighting projects increases the percentage of projects won as clients can visualize the real potential.

During this session, you will:

  • Understand the benefits of including illumination in the design process.
  • Review options to make adding illumination EASY throughout the process.
  • Minimize Designer unknowns when adding illumination to designs.

How can we adapt our design process to accommodate ‘distance design’, even if that distance is just a few blocks away?

This webinar will provide practical information on how to create and/or streamline your digital design process.

During this session, you will:

  • Compare tools that provide a digital design platform.
  • Formulate a seamless digital design process.

Designing a Bathroom with SketchUp

When:

March 7, 2023

Presenter:

Betsy Miller, CKD, Owner & Principal Designer, Function First Design

CEUs: .1
What You Will Learn

This webinar will introduce you to working with SketchUp to create professional and detailed bathroom designs complete with renderings and technical drawings. SketchUp can be utilized as a stand-alone program and also has the ability to interface with many other design programs to import/export files.

As a prerequisite, you will want to be familiar with the general functionality of SketchUp and how to draw basic shapes in the program; if needed, there are some great “getting started with SketchUp” courses on YouTube to get you up to speed prior to this session.

Everything we will cover can be done without purchasing paid SketchUp extensions (add-on programs that upgrade features and functionality). After you are familiar with the basics, you may be interested in exploring some extensions that will make your workflow easier and faster.

We will, however, introduce a few free extensions that are universally useful and simple to integrate. In general, though, we’ll just stick with the standard toolchain to get you up and running.

During this session, you will:

  • Create a room: walls, windows, doors, floor, and ceiling
  • Place cabinetry, fixtures, accessories, and other objects
  • Generate and apply custom finishes and tile designs

Here’s what you will know how to do in SketchUp after the session:
• Create a room: walls, windows, doors, floor, and ceiling
• Place cabinetry and fixtures in a room
• Utilize the SketchUp warehouse to source objects
• Select and assign textures and materials
• Generate and apply custom tile designs
• Add countertop, backsplash, accessories, and other finishing touches
• Transfer design files to “Layout” to generate technical drawing and place renderings on title block
• Add dimensions and notations in “Layout” to complete the drawing set
