Confident, Collaborative Leadership: What to Control, When to Collaborate, How to Stay Confident

When:

October 2, 2023

Presenter:

Rebecca West, CEO, Seriously Happy Homes

CEUs: .1
What You Will Learn

Do you feel confident in your role as a leader? When you need to trust others to do their job, do you feel like you’re able to get the results you need – without micromanaging your team members? Do your clients, contractors, and team members trust you as a leader, and get you what you need, when you need it? Or do you feel like you’re always chasing people for things you’ve asked them for? Worse, do you feel like folks dismiss you, even when you *try* to lead?

People love to follow great leaders! Great leaders provide a clear vision for the outcome of a project, and create confidence in both the end goal and the journey. They make sure everyone knows what the team is trying to accomplish, and ensure that everyone has the tools they need to succeed, without micromanaging every detail. But great leadership starts long before we start assigning tasks to others. Our behaviors, words, and choices either establish us as a leader (making it easier to succeed), *or* they undermine our position as a leader (making it harder than it has to be to get things done).

Ready to step up as a great leader, feel proud of your team, and be trusted by your team members? Let’s make sure that your approach to leadership (including the words you use, the behaviors you model, and the decisions you make) help the whole team succeed together. Whether you have an official title as a leader, or simply want to step up as a leader in your current role, this webinar will give you the confidence to take charge, especially when there is no clear leader in the room.

Learning Objectives:

  • You will be able to determine what is in your influence, and how can you control the outcome without micromanaging the journey.
  • Learn tips that cement your authority while elevating your team members (be they employees, clients, or contractors).
  • Identify words and behaviors that might undermine your authority, and level up your confidence as a leader.

How To Meet Your Client’s Smart Home Needs & Questions

When:

September 12, 2023

Presenter:

Josh Christian , CEO, Home Technology Association

CEUs: .1
What You Will Learn

Technology is increasingly woven into the fabric of our everyday lives. The pandemic made this reality even more noticeable with so many suddenly working and learning from home, creating more demand for more home technology. Beyond entertainment technologies like audio/video and media rooms, the peace of mind supplied by security systems and surveillance cameras, and the requirement for reliable and secure Wi-Fi, clients increasingly want their home to be “smart”. What exactly is a “smart home” and how do I answer my clients’ questions about smart home options? How does this affect my kitchen and bath design? How much do these home technologies cost? Who should install it? How does this affect the aesthetic design of the project, and what other trades might be affected?

This webinar will answer the above questions and empower you to have confident conversations with your client about how to approach their home tech needs. By having a plan on how to deal with the home’s low-voltage technologies, not only are you providing valuable guidance and insights to your clients, but your projects will also benefit aesthetically. In the past, designers were happy if the home’s technologies didn’t create an eyesore, though today’s proactive designer understands that properly designed and specified home technology can instead beautify a space and make the entire home more user-friendly.

This course will share the scope of technologies that professional home technology integrators install and how to find and work with one that understands you and your clients’ needs.

During this session, you will:

  • Gain the confidence and simple tools needed to quickly evaluate their clients’ technology requirements.
  • Establish why a technology integrator should be a key resource for kitchen and bath designers and why to engage integrators early.
  • Share how to find qualified home technology integrators that are used to working with design professionals.

Going Green: Tips For Prioritizing Sustainability in Your Design Process

When:

August 30, 2023

Presenter:

Jessica Petrino, Editorial Director, AJ Madison
Mary Moulds, Marketing & Events Director, Pro Division, AJ Madison
Mike Foti, Vice President, Renovation Angel
Sarah Zohar, Founder & Lead Designer, Sarah Z Designs

CEUs: .1
What You Will Learn

Join us for a panel discussion on sustainability in the home improvement space with representatives from AJ Madison, Renovation Angel, and Sarah Z Designs. Prioritizing sustainability is a brand-building opportunity. It opens the door for exciting partnerships with like-minded clients, design-build pros, and suppliers in the home improvement space. And of course, specifying sustainable products and services is beneficial for the environment.

According to the World Green Building Council, the global green building industry has the potential to cut energy consumption by 50% or more by 2050. The recently released annual Energy Pulse study from Shelton Group suggests that consumers in the market for a new home prioritize energy-efficient features over luxury items. Eighty-five percent said they’d pay more for an Energy Star-certified home, and their preferences for individual features bore that out: more people wanted Energy Star appliances in their new homes (52%) than wanted a pool (42%), a state-of-the-art sound system (40%), or a home theater room (29%).

It’s no secret that home renovations require thousands of micro decisions. Opting for high quality EnergyStar-Rated products, reclaimed materials, or donating perfectly good materials perpetuates an important added value and to generate a positive impact on the climate. Look to products that have recyclability and that can be repurposed. We think about the sustainability value proposition with new products, not considering what is pre-existing. There is this idea that newness is resource-saving, money-saving, and built with environmentally friendly materials. When remodeling, it’s important to select new products built to last, with attractive designs that stand the test of time. Going green doesn’t require a complete overhaul. This session will break down tangible steps that design/build professionals can take to provide a greener future for the design build opportunity.

During this session, you will:

  • Discover the sustainability value proposition as it relates to new energy saving + resource saving products.
  • earn more about ways to repurpose or donate products and finishes to add value for clients and reduce the impact of renovations on landfills.
  • Highlight tangible steps and partnerships to help to build a greener brand.

However, Sarah’s inspiration to become an interior designer derived from a young age, when she spent time with her father—who was a developer and builder for over 60 years—she observed the way he designed and built homes for his clients. As a result, she developed an early appreciation and a keen eye for the art of design and began to develop her own style.

What You Will Learn

Designers sometimes get a “bad” reputation of designing over a budget, it happens – but we should always be aware of our budgetary constraints. While we may have those constraints, it doesn’t mean we can’t create a space that is both beautiful and functional.

However, it is our job to direct clients to the products that will not only function in their space but also be aesthetically pleasing. Just because they like 3 different wallpapers, does not mean we need to use them all. Just because the neighbors next door remodeled their space one way, does not mean we need to follow. In this session, Liz Kennedy, will showcase the importance of creating a home specifically for your client and their family. Make it your own. Make it a place you love to live.

During this session, you will:

  • Learn how to design to the budget, not the taste.
  • Learn to identify what fits into a space vs. choosing just because you like it.
  • Learn how to make the space your own and not emulate what the next designer is doing.

Liz Kennedy – Designer – Elm Construction, LLC

First and foremost I am a child of God, a sinner saved by grace and a zest for my life to reflect Christ. Growing up, I would drive my mother nuts by changing her decor every season and moving things around. I always wanted to change the norm and create something new. After graduating early, I secured my first job at a tile manufacturer then went on to work for countertop fabricators. Through working with contractors, other designers and becoming active in our local Home Builders Association, I had no question of what I wanted to do in my career. In 2016, I began my first career as a full time designer for a high end residential remodeling company in Birmingham. In my three and a half years with this company I gained invaluable knowledge and experience of the construction world.Through working with many trade partners, I gained a respect for the different puzzle pieces of remodeling. Knowledge of products of fixtures, finishes and construction materials helps me daily in designing projects from additions to kitchens and baths. As a designer we have the blessing of impacting how families live their lives. We create kitchens where they will prepare their holiday meals with the families around the island. We give families spaces that they can truly enjoy being in and not just live in. As cheesy as it is, we truly create homes out of houses. And that – the smile and hug at the end of the project – makes all of the backorders and spec changes worth it.
